More than 1,000 people returned to a Cypress, Texas, gas station Sunday night to honor Darren Goforth, the Harris County sheriff's deputy who was gunned down seemingly at random last week.
Flowers, balloons and cards piled up at the pump where Goforth was shot Friday night as community members marched for a second time in the town near Houston.
"It infuriates me, and there is no reason for it," Christopher Watkins told NBC station KPRC. "The man did nothing.
"I don't care which department you work for. They are understaffed, overworked and underpaid," Watkins said. "But they still get up and do it every day."
Shannon Jaruay Miles, 30, of Cypress, is charged with capital murder in the slaying of Goforth, 47, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff's office with a wife and two kids. He is being held without bond pending his arraignment Monday morning.

Goforth's wife, Kathleen, issued a statement calling her husband "an incredibly intricate blend of toughness and gentility."
"He was loyal — fiercely so," she said. "And he was ethical; the right thing to do is what guided his internal compass. I admired this quality, perhaps the most."
