The shooting happened Friday afternoon near the Rio Grande in North Laredo at about 5.30pm local time (6.30pm ET) Friday afternoon, officials told local NBC affiliate KGNS.

The shots came from the Mexican side of the border, it reported.

Border Patrol spokeswoman Sara Melendez told the Laredo Morning Times that the helicopter landed safely and no injuries were reported.

Five shots were fired but only two hit the aircraft, it reported.
