Two bodies were found Thursday evening after a small plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico near Destin, Florida, authorities said.

The victims, a female and a male, were believed to have been the only people on board. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office did not identify them, but said the couple's plane was registered in Texas.

Extensive debris was located between Henderson Beach State Park and the Walton County line, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said late Thursday. Numerous agencies, including the Coast Guard, had been searching for survivors.

Witnesses called 911 about 6:52 p.m. ET to report seeing the plane crash into the water, according to the sheriff's office, which said a Piper Archer was overdue at Destin Executive Airport.
