One person was killed and at least three were injured after a single-engine plane leaving from a municipal airport in Indiana crashed abruptly after take-off, hitting two houses. The crash took place less than a mile from the Greenwood Municipal Airport at around 2:19 p.m., according to Greenwood Assistant Chief of Police Matthew Fillenwarth. The plane hit one house and then skidded through a backyard before coming to a rest next to another house. The crash knocked down power lines that were connected to the houses. No one in the houses was injured, and the American Red Cross is on scene to help residents find shelter, Fillenwarth said.
Two bystanders pulled a co-pilot from the wreckage before it burst into flames. The plane’s pilot died in the fire, which was quickly put out by local firefighters. Two people on the ground were injured, including one who was shocked by a power line, but neither required medical attention. Fillenwarth said the co-pilot was rushed to an Indianapolis hospital, where he is receiving medical attention. At this time, the names of those on the aircraft have not been released, and the FAA is investigating the crash.
