James Davis, a 24-year-old man who pleaded guilty in a vicious mob attack on 54-year-old Detroit motorist Steve Utash, has been sentenced to a year in jail, his lawyer Jason Michael Malkiewicz told NBC News. Davis apologized to Utash and his family Thursday, according to NBC affiliate WDIV. "I don't want my whole life to be judged on that one moment," he said in court.

Utash accidentally struck a 10-year-old boy with his pickup truck April 2. He was trying to offer assistance to the boy when a group of men rushed him, perpetrating what Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan described as a "senseless vigilante style attack." Utash is recovering at home with his family.
