The Florida man charged with killing a veteran police officer after shooting him seven times and running over him with his car was not granted bond during his first court appearance Monday. Marco Antonio Parilla Jr., 23, was wanted for violating his probation when he encountered Tarpon Springs Officer Charles Kondek. Parilla told investigators he shot at Kondek because he felt like "a caged rat" and didn't want to go back to prison.

Parilla was detained by police shortly after the shooting and has been charged with first-degree murder, leaving the scene of a crash with injury, cocaine possession and three other felonies related to the incident, according to court documents. A judge appointed a public defender to represent Parilla, said Stephen Thomson, a spokesman for the Clearwater Court.

Kondek was a father of six children and a former New York City police officer. The Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association set up a fund for Kondek's family, according to NBC affiliate WFLA.
