Teen Killed After Kids Play With Gun in Detroit Home

Police believe the shooting was accidental, and occurred after two teens and two younger children were playing with a gun they found Tuesday.

A 14-year-old girl was killed in Detroit Tuesday after some children alone in a home were playing with a gun, police said.

The apparently accidental shooting happened as four children, the 14-year-old, a teenage boy, and two children between the ages of 5 and 7, were left unsupervised at the home, Assistant Police Chief James White told NBC station WDIV.

"There was a gun in the house," Assistant Police Chief James White told the station. "The gun was not secure and the details are sketchy from that point, but it does look like one of the children was playing with the weapon and it discharged, striking her fatally."

Tuesday’s shooting is the second time in a month that a child found a gun and was killed with it in Detroit. A 10-year-old boy was killed in an accidental shooting on Dec. 30 after four children were left alone in a home, police said. Police charged the boyfriend of the 10-year-old’s mother in that case, WDIV reported.
