An entire town in Washington state was evacuated as a fast-moving wildfire roared toward homes, officials said.
About 300 people in and around Roosevelt were given a mandatory evacuation notice on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the Klickitat County Emergency Management 911/Dispatch.
A reverse 911 call was sent out after the fire jumped State Route 14, which has since been closed, and spread quickly east toward the town. Roosevelt sits on the banks of the Columbia River, just across from Arlington, Oregon.
Some outbuildings had been burned but no homes had been damaged, according to the statement released at 9 p.m. local time Tuesday (midnight ET).
Several fire departments in the county were involved in fighting the fire. The Red Cross has set up an evacuation shelter for displaced residents at a school around 30 miles north, the statement said.
