A football player at Troy University died in a motorcycle accident in Alabama over the weekend, officials said.
Troy University said in a statement that student Nathan Harris was killed Saturday morning in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
The 19-year-old collided with a pickup truck on Highway 180 about 10:00 a.m. ET and died at the scene, Gulf Shores Police told NBC affiliate WPMI. Police told WPMI that Harris was wearing a helmet.
Troy University Athletics Director Jeremy McClain called the death of Harris "heartbreaking."
"This is an unthinkable tragedy and the thoughts and prayers of the Troy Athletics Department and the Troy University community are with Nathan's family and friends," McClain said in the statement.
Harris joined the Troy University football team in the fall as a walk-on and worked his way into a starting position as a holder, according to the university. He graduated from and also played football at Gulf Shore High School.
"Nate was a tremendous person and a very caring young man," Troy football head coach Neal Brown said. "While his time here at Troy University was brief, his impact was felt by many."
