A United Airlines plane from Honolulu to Washington, D.C., returned to Hawaii shortly after takeoff Saturday night after a “mechanical issue,” the airline said.
A passenger on the Boeing 767 posted on Twitter that the plane turned around an hour and a half after takeoff from Honolulu International Airport because the plane had an engine shutdown. United Airlines spokesman Luke Punzenberger could not confirm an engine failure.
The plane had 299 people on board and landed safely, according to a statement from United Airlines. No one was injured, the statement said.
Passengers were accommodated on another flight, which was still en route to Washington Dulles International Airport on Sunday morning, Punzenberger said.
