NYPD officers responded to the United Nations in Manhattan Saturday after reports of an intruder, according to The Associated Press.

The man eluded police and then "jumped into the East River, apparently," said NYPD spokesman Sgt. Lee Jones.

The UN building is directly adjacent to the river.

Jones told NBC News that police searched the deep and often turbulent waters Saturday but could not find the man, who has not been identified.

He said the search was called off, but officers were still "patrolling the area" on Sunday.
