A salon in Washington state doesn't simply specialize in cutting hair. It's also dedicated to cutting waste.
At Sensa Salon in Seattle, hair clippings that would usually get swept up and thrown out are being re-purposed to be used in "hair booms," which are used to absorb oil after spills.
“What most people don’t know is that hair is fully recyclable,” said one of the salon's owners, Shawn Carlile.
And it's not just the hair that the salon is recycling. Sensa recently aquired a certifcation from Greencircle Salons, an organization that equips salons in the U.S. and Canada to properly recycle clippings, foils, color tubes, plastics, paper and chemicals.
The average salon disposes of more than 1,800 pounds of these materials each year, according to Greencircle.
Since becoming certified, Sensa reduced their waste by 98 percent, according to NBC affiliate KING5. Carlile said he is surprised every salon isn't getting on board.
"We have to start somewhere and say, 'This can't happen anymore,'" he said.
More that 100 salons across the U.S. are Greencircle certified, according to its website.
