Drivers in New England, the Northeast and parts of the Midwest faced a slick morning commute on Monday — and possibly a messy trip home, too — as a winter weather system chugged east.
Winter storm watches were posted from Massachusetts through the Ohio Valley and as far west as Missouri. Forecasters warned of sleet and freezing rain in the big cities along the Interstate 95 corridor, and some school districts around Washington delayed their starts, NBC Washington reported.
A glaze of ice up to a quarter-inch thick, more than enough to be dangerous, could cover roads, The Weather Channel and New England Cable News reported. In northern New England, upstate New York and along Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, some cities could see 3 inches of snow.
Most of the Eastern Seaboard got rain, heavy in places. Heavy rain in Raleigh, North Carolina, caused localized flooding.
The icy weather should let up in some places as temperatures rise later Monday, although rain is forecast to continue throughout the day, and ice and snow are still possible well into the afternoon in most of the Northeast.
