Heavy rain soaked Phoenix, Arizona, Tuesday morning, leading to flash floods and prompting at least a dozen rescues of residents and motorists trapped in vehicles and homes by high water. As much as 5 inches of rain fell in the area, shutting down roads, trapping cars and flooding farms — and more rain could hit the area this week.
The storm knocked out electric power to nearly 3,000 homes in the region, officials said. Rescue crews rescued at least a dozen people, but no injuries were reported. Rescuers also had to use helicopters to save people stranded on their rooftops by the rising waters. In one case, a resident waved a white flag from inside here home surrounded by floodwaters, altering rescue personnel who rescued her.
Interstate 17, which was flooded by water and left caked with mood by the torrent, reopened Tuesday afternoon, NBC affiliate KNPX reported.
