Tropical Storm Bertha, the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, will deliver heavy winds and rainfall to the Windward Islands on Friday night before making its way to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands on Saturday and Sunday, meteorologists predicted. Bertha formed late Thursday night, prompting the National Weather Service to issue tropical storm warnings for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, which are directly in the path of the fast-moving system.

Bertha will likely bring sustained winds of 45 mph to the Caribbean, according to the National Weather Service. Parts of many of the islands will be drenched in 1-3 inches of rain from the storm, but portions of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands might see 6 inches, according to Weather.com. While the rain will help to relieve effects of ongoing drought conditions in the Caribbean, an onslaught of rainfall will bring risks of flash flooding and mudslides in the parched region. Bertha will progress northeast at the end of the weekend, but will likely stay over the Atlantic without threatening the U.S. coast, said meteorologist Carl Parker.
