A 55-foot-long whale is being dissected after it was found dead on the bow of a container ship in New York harbor.
The finback whale was towed to an Army Corps of Engineers station in Jersey City, N.J., after it was found at the weekend. Staff from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine began conducting a necropsy on the dead mammal on Wednesday.
A spokesman for the stranding center said it isn't uncommon for whales to make their way into shipping lanes as they travel up and the down the East Coast.
