Around 2,000 U.S. Marines have been placed on alert in preparation for Tuesday's release of a report on CIA torture against terror suspects. The personnel, who are based in and around the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea, were put on alert to deal with potential threats following the release of the report by the Senate Intelligence Committee.
The U.S. Navy has several amphibious ships with Marines and Ospreys on board in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Aden. There are also Marines and Ospreys at a land base in the Mediterranean. The U.S. Marines are permanently in the region, primarily to provide additional security to U.S. embassies. The elevated alert status has been ordered as a precaution. Officials would not discuss exact numbers or locations.
