Eight children and two adults were injured after a roller coaster derailed and fell off the tracks at an amusement park Sunday afternoon in Scotland, police said.
M&D's amusement park in Motherwell in North Lanarkshire said in a statement that the theme park was closed after "a serious incident occurred at M&D's today involving The Tsunami roller coaster."
Lanarkshire police said the ride, made up of gondolas in a train and carrying nine people, detached from its rails, struck the ride's main structure and crashed into the ground.
After initially saying 11 people had been injured, authorities later confirmed that eight children and two adults were treated at three hospitals. Their conditions weren't reported.
Photos taken by bystanders showed the cars of the roller coaster on the ground in a heap. Some people in the photos are wearing ponchos, and the pavement appears to be wet.
Liam MacKinnon of Larkhall and Dean Taylor of the Glasgow area, both 12, were in line waiting for the ride when it crashed. Liam told NBC News that he and his friend both felt lucky to be alive.
"All we heard was screaming and then people saying the ride fell off," Liam said. "I saw a lot of men trying to push up the ride. There was somebody underneath the ride, so I phoned my mum and then I told her all about it.
"I felt horrified," Liam said. "We could've been the next people to fall off that. We could've been the people that went through that fence and went into that hole and in the ambulance right now."
Tsunami is Scotland’s only inverted roller coaster, according to M&D's website. It reaches speeds of up to 40 mph, the website said. In 2011, nine people were stranded 60 feet in the air for eight hours before they were rescued, according to The Daily Record.
