LONDON — An 18-year-old American woman remained in a critical condition Friday after being hit by a subway train in London, police told NBC News.

The teenager was traveling in a group when she was struck at Bond Street station, in one of the capital's main shopping areas, the British Transport Police said.

The incident happened at around 7:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. ET) Thursday. Police, fire and ambulance crews rushed to the scene and the woman was taken to hospital, where she was still listed as critical Friday.

The BTP said they were treating it as an accident.

The London Evening Standard quoted a Transport for London worker as saying that the woman was leaning over the platform to look at a mouse on the tracks when she was struck, although this was not confirmed by NBC News.
