An Australian mom has been arrested for murder in the killings of her seven children and an eighth youngster, but has not been formally charged, police said.

The 37-year-old woman was hospitalized in stable condition with stab wounds and was "lucid," authorities said. They did not disclose her name or what she told them about the killings at a home in the Cairns suburb of Manoora. Investigators have no other suspects in the deaths of the children, who range in age from 18 months to 14 years old.

"We've located a number of weapons," Deputy Inspector Bruno Asnicar told reporters Saturday, adding that the weapons were knives. "It's an absolutely tragic event."

The horrific scene was discovered Friday morning by the woman's 20-year-old son. "They’re only babies," another relative, Lisa Thaiday, told Channel 7 News. "Just shocking … you know, eight children gone."
