The FBI has added a former U.S. cab driver, suspected of joining a terror group in East Africa, to its list of about 30 people considered “most wanted terrorists.”
Liban Haji Mohamed, 29, is a Somali-born, naturalized U.S. citizen who worked as a cab driver in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. The FBI says he left America in July of 2012 to join the Somalia-based Al-Shabab terror group in East Africa.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mohamed. He's charged with providing material support to Harakat Shabaab Al-Mujahidin, also known as Al-Shabab and Al-Qaeda.
The terror group "has claimed responsibility for many bombings in Somalia and Uganda and is known to have recruited westerners," the FBI said in a statement. Al-Shabab was also behind the massacre at a mall in Kenya in 2013 that left 67 people dead. The group was designated as a foreign terrorist organization in 2008.
The FBI says Mohamed was a close associate of a convicted terrorist, Zachary Chesser, who was sentenced in 2011 to 25 years in prison for attempted material support to Al-Shabab.
