Gunmen Kidnap High-Ranking Afghan Official in Broad Daylight

KABUL, Afghanistan - Gunmen kidnapped a high-ranking Afghan government official in broad daylight from the streets of the country's capital on Tuesday.

Deputy Minister of Public Works Ahmad Shah Wahid was removed from his car at gunpoint as he was being driven to work, according to local reports.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed that minister's driver had been shot.

The first high-profile kidnapping so far this year was deeply concerning, according to Wadid Safi, a political scientist at Kabul University.

"It is a warning to the government to tighten security," he said. "Government officials will need to take more care if this becomes a pattern."

No one claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. It was unclear whether the crime was politically motivated or the work of a criminal gang.
