A manhunt for the killer of two British tourists slain on a Thai island gathered pace Tuesday, with local police saying security cameras had captured footage of a man spotted "running" at the time of the killing. At least 12 people on Koh Tao were also given DNA tests to see whether they matched a sample taken from a bloodied hoe found on the beach near the bodies, local police chief Jakkrapan Kaewkhao told NBC News. Investigators believe the victims, who were identified as 24-year-old David Miller and 23-year-old Hannah Witheridge, were killed with the garden tool after a beach party early Monday. Miller had a deep wound in the back of his head while Witheridge suffered a wound to her face.
"If someone’s DNA matches the hoe then perhaps we will be in a position to make an arrest," Kaewkhao added. "The place where they were found does not have security cameras, but footage nearby shows someone running at the time of the killing."
