The fighting in Israel showed no signs of slowing Sunday, with militants firing more than 100 rockets into Israel and that country’s military responding with more than 100 airstrikes into Gaza, officials said.
The Gaza health ministry said 11 more people were killed in Sunday’s violence, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed to 172 — 36 of whom were children. The Israel Defense Forces said in all more than 900 rockets have been fired into the country since the offensive began, wounding 16, including 6 soldiers, and resulting in no fatalities. The military said it has attacked more than 1,400 targets in Gaza. Thousands of Israeli troops have massed along the border in recent days.
The new rocket attacks and airstrikes come despite international calls for a cease-fire, which included an overture from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. was ready to help restore calm.
"We don't know when the operation will end," Netanyahu told his Cabinet on Sunday. "It might take a long time." He said the military was prepared "for all possibilities."
