LONDON — The heart-stopping moment when a worker narrowly missed being killed by an oncoming express train traveling 105 mph was captured on dashcam video.
The train driver had left his locomotive to investigate a wheel fault when he noticed the other train approaching on an adjacent line.
“He then lay down close to his train in the space between the lines … with three seconds to spare,” according to an investigation into the Aug, 3. near-miss on Britain’s busy east coast line which links London and Scotland.
The incident was captured on the dashcam of the oncoming passenger express train, which was accelerating up to the permitted speed of 125mph on the track at Kyle Beck near Tollerton in North Yorkshire, England.
Britain’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB), which released a still image from the dashcam, concluded that the near-miss was caused by a misunderstanding on the telephone between the driver of the faulty train and a signaler over whether it was safe to inspect the locomotive.
The worker was not injured.
