At least seven people were killed when a military jet crashed onto a main road during an airshow in southern England on Saturday, according to emergency responders.
Police said more bodies could be found at the crash site, more than nine hours after a Hawker Hunter aircraft hit several cars on a busy road just north of Shoreham Airport, which was hosting the Shoreham Airshow.
Seven people on the roadway died, the pilot of the plane suffered life-threatening injuries and another 14 people were treated for minor injuries, according to South East Coast Ambulance Service, which responded to the catastrophe.
The aircraft, a sub-sonic British jet first developed in the 1950s, eventually came to rest on the roadside at about 1:20 p.m. local time (8:20 a.m. ET), according to a statement from Sussex Police. Photos taken during the crash show a ball of flames and billowing black smoke surrounding the doomed jet.
Search and rescue crews were still combing the site of the crash at 10 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET) Saturday night.
"We are continuing to search the area to ensure that we have identified all casualties. It is possible that there are still bodies at the scene and it is important that our search is professional and thorough,” said Sussex Police superintendent Jane Derrick.
The Air Accident Investigation Bureau also responded to the scene, and authorities were asking anyone with photos or videos of the fiery crash to contact them.
The remainder of the Shoreham Airshow, which was supposed to run through Sunday, was canceled, organizers announced on the annual event’s website.
