TOKYO — A transgender man was found dead with his face skinned off, local media reported.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police told NBC News that 38-year-old Yoshi Tsuchida's body was discovered wrapped in a blanket at his apartment in the Fussa City area on the outskirts of the Japanese capital on Thursday.

Citing police sources, several Japanese news outlets reported that Tsuchida's face had been skinned off with a sharp implement. NBC News has been unable able to independently verify the reports.

Police received a 911 call from a 28-year-old man who shared an apartment with Tsuchida. According to the Sankei Shimbun newspaper, he identified himself as the victim's adopted son but said he was also in a relationship with the deceased man.

Nippon TV television reported that the two men came home around 5:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m. ET Wednesday) and slept in separate rooms. The younger man woke up and found Tsuchida's body later that day.

Tsuchida was born a woman but had undergone gender reassignment surgery, the Sankei Shimbun reported.
