Students from Nashville’s Hillwood High School erupted in excitement Monday evening when Brian Williams accepted their invitation to speak at graduation live on NBC affiliate WSMV.

“I’m enormously flattered to be asked,” said Williams.

The invitation came from a group of students who posted a video to YouTube in February asking Brian to speak at their graduation, after being inspired by a commencement speech he gave at Elon University last year.

Williams said simply, “We’re doing this.”

He also warned all future high school students who might be getting ideas that there will be no topping this one. “It was done better at Hillwood than anyone else who will try to attempt this in the future.”

Nashville’s NBC station WSMV reports that grades have been up at Hillwood for three straight years and its graduation rate is highest among 12 neighborhood Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.
