In his first television interview since the fatal car wreck that nearly took his life, a tearful Tracy Morgan opened up to Matt Lauer about his hopes — and fears — for the future.

“I wonder how I’m gonna be funny again,” Morgan said. “Remembering my identity, what do I do?”

Holding onto a cane, Morgan was overcome by emotion when talking about his fans, who he said have encouraged him to “come back.”

“I can’t wait to make them laugh again,” he said.

Morgan, who told Lauer he has both good and bad days, was critically injured last June when a limousine bus he was riding in was struck from behind by a Walmart tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike. The accident left him in a coma and killed his friend, fellow comedian James McNair.

Morgan suffered severe brain trauma, a broken leg and several broken ribs. Two other passengers in the limo were also injured.

“Sometimes I don’t feel well, sometimes emotionally I don’t feel well,” Morgan said. “Now it’s just onto the business of getting better and healing.”

Last week, Walmart settled a lawsuit with Morgan for an undisclosed amount. Morgan commended Walmart for “stepping up in the way they did."

Walmart has already reached a settlement with McNair’s family.

Morgan said he has a lot of work to do before he can return to the stage, but he expects he will perform again.

“One day, when I’m 100 percent, I’m going to grab that mic and I’m never going to let it go,” he said. “I’m gonna be the funniest I can be, ‘cause I ain’t never going to take life for granted no more.”
