A week-old wildfire in north-central Washington state has burned nearly 400 square miles, but firefighters have made progress in battling the flames.

The Carlton Complex of fires were ignited by lightning July 14, and the four separate blazes merged into one massive wildfire over the weekend. Now the largest in the state’s history, the fire was 16 percent contained as of Tuesday morning, according to fire spokeswoman Jessica Payne.

The fire has so far claimed one life and destroyed at least 150 homes.

NBC’s Jacob Rascon reports from Alta Lake, Washington, a community hit especially hard by the fire.
