It’s summer of an election year, which means you are going to hear a lot of the word “veepstakes.” Putting aside the idle speculation and political self-aggrandizement that swirls around the parlour game of who will get the bid, here’s one very important thing on the Democratic side to keep in mind: With control of the Senate tantalizingly in reach, Democrats are loathe to surrender a Democratically-held seat to even a short-term appointment by a Republican governor. That’s a big minus for potential candidates like Sherrod Brown, Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren, who all represent states with a GOPer at the helm who would tap their replacement.. And even if those appointments are temporary, the key is having a majority in place during the first 100 days of the next presidency, when big policy pushes are the most likely to get done. It’s one reason you’ve been hearing so much lately about Sen. Tim Kaine from Virginia. Kaine - who was the runner up in Barack Obama’s VP search in 2008 - has a lot of things going for him; he’s well-liked, comes from a swing state, and is a team player who knows the ropes of foreign policy (from his time in the Senate) and party fundraising (from his time at the DNC). But that “D” next to his home state governor’s name might be the difference between “runner up” and “running mate.”
