Love Her or Hate Her, Social Media Proclaim Clinton's Nomination Historic

Like everything else about her in a quarter-century in national politics, Hillary Clinton's formal nomination for president Tuesday created sharp divisions among Americans.

But a rare consensus did emerge online Tuesday night:

No matter what people think of Clinton herself, almost everyone recognized that her achievement in becoming the first woman to win the nomination of one of the two major political parties is a defining moment in American history.

Many posts on Twitter and Facebook unreservedly celebrated the milestone, and a significant proportion of them came from men as well as women:

But it was the candidate herself who put it most simply:
