Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid had to call out sick for the first day of the 114th Congress, and a new video released by his team shows just how rough his injuries were from an accident last week.
Reid, who suffered broken ribs and facial bones in a New Years Day exercising accident, appears in the YouTube video sporting a huge bandage over his right eye and a deep purple bruise on his face.
"As many people know, I fought for a couple of years," says Reid, a former boxer, in the video. "After any one of those fights, I never looked like I do now."
Reid tweeted earlier Tuesday that his doctors advised him to "work from home" even as new members of the Senate were sworn in.
In the video released later in the afternoon, Reid joked that, despite what some might think, he didn't receive his current injuries from a Madison Square Garden-caliber match.
"I didn't get this black eye by sparring with Manny [Pacquiao], by challenging Floyd Mayweather, I didn't go bull-riding, I wasn't riding a motorcycle," he said. "I was exercising in my home."
Reid said he has "some homesickness" about missing the first day but added that he had a "terrific meeting" Tuesday morning with Democratic leaders.
"We are going to continue to fight for good things for this country," he said.
