Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday he was “embarrassed” by the ugly nature of the 2016 presidential campaign.

“This has been a very tough election,” Biden said during remarks at the Sidley Austin Forum in Washington, D.C. “It’s been ugly, it’s been divisive, it’s been couse, it’s been dispiriting. And it’s more a battle of personalities than it was ideas in my view.”

Biden strongly considered entering the presidential race before ultimately deciding not run, citing both the challenges of entering the Democratic primary late and the grief that still hung over his family following the death of his son Beau Biden in May of 2015.

“I find myself embarrassed by the nature of the way this campaign was conducted. And so much for the shining city on the hill,” Biden lamented.

Earlier this week, Trump teased a 2020 presidential run before ultimately telling reporters on Wednesday he has “no intention of running.”
