White House press secretary Josh Earnest on Friday said former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has tarnished his legacy by saying President Barack Obama does not love America.

“It is sad to see when somebody who has attained a certain level of public stature and even admiration tarnishes that legacy so thoroughly,” Earnest told reporters.

Giuliani told Republicans gathered for a private dinner on Wednesday: “I do not believe that the president loves America.”

“He wasn't brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country," Giuliani added, Politico reported. The failed 2008 presidential candidate then told the New York Times that his remarks could not have been racist because the president was raised by “a white mother.”

“I feel sorry for Rudy Giuliani today,” Earnest said.
