Lou Reed: 1942-2013

Pioneering singer-songwriter Lou Reed founded the Velvet Underground and influenced generations of rock 'n' roll musicians.

Lou Reed, founder of the ground-breaking rock 'n' roll band the Velvet Underground, is pictured around 1970. The singer-songwriter died on Sunday, Oct. 27, at age 71 of an ailment related to a liver transplant he had earlier this year.

"With the Velvet Underground in the late Sixties, Reed fused street-level urgency with elements of European avant-garde music, marrying beauty and noise, while bringing a whole new lyrical honesty to rock & roll poetry," Rolling Stone wrote in a tribute on Oct. 27.
