Africa Day is celebrated across the continent each year on May 25 to celebrate the 1963 founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). On this day in 1963, 30 leaders of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which later led to the current organization known as the African Union (AU).
Migrants jump out of a boat right before it overturns off the Libyan coast on May 25. The Italian navy says it has recovered 7 bodies from the overturned migrant ship. Another 500 migrants on board were rescued.

Police had banned the planned demonstrations and scores of officers in riot gear guarded the building that houses the election commission headquarters in the center of the capital.
Passengers wave from the decks as the Harmony of the Seas cruise ship sets sail from Southampton, southern England, on May 22. Weighing nearly 130,000 tons, 'Harmony' is the world's biggest cruise ship. Measuring 1,187 feet long, if it were upright it would be taller than the Eiffel Tower.
Vietnam veteran Roberto Gonzalez is visited by one of his horses on May 21 outside the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. The hospital granted Gonzalez's wish to see his two horses one last time. He died two days later.

Rescuers searched for survivors in scorched villages enveloped in clouds of searing ash from the volcano. Seven people were killed and others were fighting life-threatening burns.

Hundreds of villagers thronged the spot and helped themselves to some of the grain. About 2.8 million Malawians - nearly 20 percent of the population - face food insecurity, making the country one of the worst hit in Southern Africa.
