The man charged with massacring nine people in a Charleston church had a note in his car with the names of other local churches — and Emanuel AME, where he opened fire, was first on the list, a law enforcement official testified Monday.
Dylann Roof had the handwritten list of other churches and their addresses in a backpack in his car on the day of the horrific mass killing, former State Law Enforcement Division agent Brittany Burke testified during Roof's death penalty trial.
Burke is one of the agents who processed evidence discovered after Roof, 22, was arrested for the June 17, 2015 slayings at the church known as Mother Emanuel.
Prosecutors on Monday showed photographs of several other items found in Roof’s car and trunk — including a Confederate flag, an American flag that had been burned, empty ammunition boxes and a laser attachment for a gun that Burke explained helped with accuracy.
Roof, a self-proclaimed white supremacist, faces 33 counts in the federal trial for the fatal shootings — 24 of which fall under federal hate crime statutes. Eighteen of the charges carry the death penalty.
Jurors on Friday heard Roof describe to the FBI how he gunned down the churchgoers at the historic black church in an attempt to ignite a race war.

"I went to that church in Charleston and I did it,” Roof said in the beginning of his confession.
