A foster mother faces child neglect charges for leaving a 15-month-old boy in a hot vehicle outside a Florida supermarket. Monique Williams, 53, posted her $1,000 bond Friday after the incident yesterday, according to NBC’s affiliate WESH.
The boy was left in the hot car for 20 minutes until a passerby called police while Williams shopped for milk. Officials found the boy in an unlocked car with rolled-up windows. The child and three others in Williams’ care were relocated to another foster home, a representative for Community-Based Care of Central Florida told NBC Orlando. "It was just a mistake I made. That's all," Williams told WESH.
Sixteen children have died this year from heat stroke after being left in cars, according to San Francisco University's Department of Earth and Climate Sciences. Last year, there were 44 heat stroke deaths of children.
