Venezuela plans to take in several hundred Palestinian orphans and other children in need of medical care this weekend, the government said in an effort that Foreign Minister Elias Jaua has been coordinating effort in Egypt for several days. The transfer of children from the war-torn region will be supervised by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and UNICEF.

The children, who were most likely orphaned or injured by Israeli army air strikes in Gaza that have killed more than 1,900 people and injured roughly 10,000 others, will be sent to hospitals and government-run shelters. The Venezuelan government also announced that it will send about six tons of aid to the Gaza Strip next, which will first be flown in army planes to Egypt.
