Super Bowl fans planning to be at the game or in the New York/New Jersey metro area to partake of the parties and related activities may still be searching for a reasonable rate on a hotel.

"As I speak to managers, mostly in Manhattan, I am seeing rates $100 higher than they would be expected to be without the big event," said John Fox of hotel advisory firm PKF Consulting.

Travel metasearch company KAYAK has another idea: New Jersey.

But you'll have to act fast.

Late last week KAYAK identified Hoboken as a "huge travel find" for Super Bowl fans, citing rates of under $200. But in our Super Bowl weekend search on KAYAK, the only hotel we found that is actually in two-square-mile Hoboken — the W Hoboken — had rates starting at over $600 per night.

Today KAYAK is recommending travelers bypass Hoboken for Jersey City.

"A recent search shows there are many hotels there that still have availability with pricing as low as $125 a night," said KAYAK spokesperson Maria Katime.

For those who do stay — or just want to play — in Hoboken, this week the city is hosting the Hoboken Huddle on Pier A, a waterfront area across the water from Manhattan. In addition to three free curling lanes, the city has set up a 16-foot-tall illuminated sculpture of the "XLVIII" Roman numerals signifying this year's Super Bowl, positioned to offer a great photo op with the New York City skyline as a backdrop.
