"Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen and actress wife Isla Fisher have donated $1 million to help suffering Syrian refugees.

"By allowing us to make their generous donation to Syrian children public, Sacha and Isla are helping highlight the tragedy of the issue today," Save the Children CEO Justin Forsyth, whose organization is getting half of the couples' generous donation, said in a statement.

The remaining $500,000 will go to the International Rescue Committee.

"Sacha and Isla's donation is a great expression of humanity, and a challenge to do more for the most vulnerable," IRC chief David Miliband said. "I hope it is an example to many others seeking practical ways of making a difference during the Christmas and New Year season."

There was no immediate statement from Cohen, a controversy-courting comedian best known for his alter ego Borat Sagdiyev — a crude and clueless fictitious Kazakh reporter obsessed with Pamela Anderson whose hilariously mangled English is larded with expressions like "niiice!"

Cohen also pushed the comedic envelope playing an Austrian fashion designer in "Bruno" and a crass tyrant modeled on deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in "The Dictator."

Fisher, who is Australian, is best known for her turns in movies like "Wedding Crashers" and "Now You See Me."
