There is no evidence that anyone tampered with the cockpit voice recorder — one of the two "black boxes" — recovered from the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, investigators said Wednesday. The Dutch Safety Board, which took over the probe from Ukraine, said an international team of experts examined the recorder and found that while it was damaged in last week's crash, the memory module was intact and it does not appear anyone manipulated it. The next step is analyzing the downloaded sound and examining the other black box — the fight data recorder. A British team will conduct the examination.
All 298 people on board the Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur were killed when, authorities said, a surface-to-air missile likely fired by pro-Russian militants took down the jet. The bodies of 40 victims were returned to the Netherlands on Wednesday morning. Investigators have not yet been able to freely visit the crash site, but the Dutch Safety Board "expects it will be able to gather sufficient relevant information."
