Germany's Win in World Cup Final a Victory for Twitter

Twitter data shows Sunday's World Cup final was the most-tweeted-about event of all time, and the second-most World Cup event of all time.

Sunday’s World Cup match was a victory for Germany … and Twitter. In the most-tweeted-about event of all time, the peak tweet-per-minute rate soared to 618,725, according to data released by the social media company. Sunday's match was the second most-tweeted-about event of the World Cup, second only to last week’s match between Germany and Brazil. 32.1 million tweets were sent out discussing Sunday’s game between Germany and Argentina. Tweets during the game were geo-tagged and charted on a real-time global heat map that shows how the game unfolded on social media around the planet. Germany’s Mario Gotze and Argentina’s Lionel Messi were among the match’s players who were most frequently mentioned on Twitter.
