iThing fans, you can now begin your countdown: Apple has confirmed it will hold a special event on September 9, at which it is widely believed the company will unveil the iPhone 6 and a new smartwatch.
Apple sent sparely designed invitations to press on Thursday, revealing only the date and a single cheeky line: "Wish we could say more." But even without official word from Apple, the rumor mill for the September event has been churning at full steam. The company typically releases a new smartphone each fall -- if it follows tradition, this generation will be the iPhone 6 -- and news reports for months have said Apple is also working on a smartwatch. There were initial rumors that Apple would wait until October to announce the so-called "iWatch," but tech blog Re/Code reported Wednesday that the device would be included at the September 9 event.
