Forget "Likes." Facebook users who really want to show their appreciation can now send their friends money. The payments feature was announced on Tuesday and will roll out to users of Facebook Messenger over the next few months. All someone needs to do send money is start a message, click on the dollar sign symbol next to the recipient's name, and then click "Pay" to subtract cash from their Visa or Mastercard debit card.
Facebook last summer made mobile users who wanted to message each other download the standalone Facebook Messenger app. Now, the company has a competitor to mobile payment apps like Venmo, PayPal and Snapchat's Snapcash.
