Captain Kirk got in a fight with the Internet on Tuesday. It started with a Tumblr post in which William Shatner set his criticism of Facebook’s new celebrity app to “kill.” Facebook Mentions was released last week as a way for “actors, athletes, musicians and other influencers” to interact with fans. Overall, Shatner praised Facebook, but he found the new app to be “ill conceived” — especially when it tried to make him follow a “Star Trek” celebrity with whom he has had a long-standing feud.
“The first person on the list I was given was George Takei (rolling my eyes.) I ended up choosing Robert Downey Jr. to follow and then I hid his posts (sorry Robert!) I think that is a big flaw in the set up. If this app is for celebrities then WHY force them to follow another celebrity in order to set up this app?”
Seeing as George Takei has a fervent Internet following, Shatner's comment earned him some social media scorn and support from "Star Trek" fans.
