Apple has released "Rewind 2011," a list of the best and most popular iTunes Store downloads. We found the app section of the Rewind to be of particular interest as it not only names an app and game of the year but also lists the top five apps in each of the twenty App Store categories.
The big honor, the app of the year title, went to photography app Instagram (with VidRhythm and Band of the Day receiving the runner-up labels). Tiny Tower took the game of the year trophy and Tiny Wings and Touchgrind BMX trailed behind as the runner-ups.
When it comes to the top apps, based on downloads, it's no surprise that Angry Birds took the top slot in the paid category while Facebook's iOS app rules the free category.
You can check Apple's full Rewind 2011 — which also includes lists for movie, music, TV show, book, and podcast downloads — by opening up the iTunes Store and clicking the large link announcing the list's arrival.
