Bendable smartphone? Flexible battery could make it so

Aug. 7, 2012 at 1:14 PM ET

In a few years, handheld gadgets may be as thin and flexible as the screen protector on your smartphone thanks to the development of a bendable lithium-ion battery.

The video above of the breakthrough battery from the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology shows the battery maintaining a steady voltage to power a blue LED light as it is bent multiple times.

Keon Jae Lee and colleagues from the institute’s department of materials science and engineering describe the manufacturing process in the journal Nano Letters

The research team is currently working on technology to scale up the production of the batteries and enhance their charge density.

“The advent of a high performance flexible thin film battery will accelerate the development of next-generation fully flexible electronic systems,” Lee said in a news release
