Ow, this hurts for devoted BlackBerry users who also like Gmail: Google is ending its support for the Gmail App for BlackBerry as of Nov. 22.
"Over this past year, we've focused efforts on building a great Gmail experience in the mobile browser and will continue investing in this area," Google said on its blog. " Users may continue to use the app, if installed, however it will not be supported by Google, or available for download starting Nov. 22."
BlackBerry users can "continue to access Gmail through the mobile Web app at http://www.gmail.com in their BlackBerry Web browser," Google said.
So, Gmail is still to be had on the BlackBerry, just not through a special app. It's a bit of a slap in the face, though, to Research In Motion, which makes BlackBerrys.
There's more info for users on Google's FAQ page.
BlackBerry, which has gone from being the Cadillac to the Saturn of smartphones, has been overshadowed in recent years by the iPhone and various phones that use Google's Android-based operating system. There was a time where BlackBerry was a bigger name in the mobile world than Google. But, no matter how you feel about it, those times are long gone.
